The Honourable Robert M. Mainville

The Honourable Robert M. Mainville was born November 27, 1953 in Montreal, Quebec. He studied at the Université de Montréal (LL.L) and at McGill University (LL.M.), and was called to the Bar of Quebec in 1976. At the time of his appointment as judge, he was a partner with Gowling, Lafleur, Henderson LLP and was their head of the national practice group on aboriginal law. He has extensive legal experience in the fields of administrative and constitutional law, environment and energy law and labour law. At the time of his appointment as judge, he was listed as one of the Best Lawyers in Canada and in L’Expert as a leader in the field of aboriginal law. He was involved in labour negotiations in the public sector and in numerous aboriginal land claims, specific claims and treaty implementation negotiations. He was also actively involved in numerous business ventures, including at the international level. He lectured in aboriginal law at McGill University (2001-2004). He has published two books and numerous articles related to aboriginal law. He was appointed judge of the Federal Court and ex officio judge of the Federal Court of Appeal on June 16, 2009 and judge of the Court Martial Appeal Court of Canada on November 19, 2009.  He was appointed as a judicial member of the Competition Tribunal on November 26, 2009.  Address: Federal Court, Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0H9.
